About Me

About Me

Á la a college orientation session, I'll begin this section by tossing off a few fun facts about myself: I have twin brothers, I once camped on the Great Wall of China, and I currently own a dog, a tortoise, and three cats.

I'm a recent college graduate and an early-career journalist. I've worked as a freelance writer, a peer tutor for the Haverford College writing program, a news editor for the Haverford Clerk, and an editorial intern for Smart + Strong Publications. Besides healthcare, I cover ecology, scientific research, pop culture developments and my personal life. I've won multiple accolades for both my creative writing and journalism, including a Scholastic Art and Writing Award (2014), a merit scholarship to Westtown School (2015), a semifinalist title in Cultural Weekly's Jack Grapes Poetry Prize (2019) and a finalist title in the Atlanta Review's Dan Veach Prize for Younger Poets (2020).

Originally from the small town of Barrington, Rhode Island, I've also lived in Shenzhen, China; Beijing, China; Haverford, PA; Dublin, Ireland; and New York, NY. As a result of my stint in Beijing, I can speak Mandarin fluently (and have a deep and abiding love for jiaozi). You can contact me with writing commissions and employment opportunities (or just for more information) at the bottom of this page or at carolinetien612@gmail.com.

Work Experience

Recent Editorial Experience

Hearst Journalism Fellow,

August 2021-Present

I am a general assignment reporter for The San Antonio Express-News, one of the most widely-read newspapers in Texas. I also cover City Hall proceedings for the municipality of Windcrest.

Freelance Science and Culture Writer,
June 2020 - Present

I wrote news articles and features for a variety of websites and magazines. You can check out samples of my writing by clicking on the "Articles" tab at the top of the page.

Editorial Intern for the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME),

Summer 2019

I was selected for this competitive internship on the strength of submitted writing samples and employer recommendations and was subsequently assigned to write for several magazines owned by the healthcare publishing giant Smart + Strong. During my tenure, I mastered technical tools such as CMS, Photoshop, and InDesign as well as editorial ones such as pitching, researching, writing, line-editing, and copy-editing. In total, I completed some 50 news articles, op-eds, and features, several of which achieved Internet virality.

Senior News Editor of the Haverford Clerk, Spring 2019 - Spring 2020

I oversaw editorial operations—ensuring that there are no glaring gaps in coverage, recruiting staff as needed, and following through on long-term projects—for Haverford College's online newspaper. Several pieces I wrote or edited have accrued over 10k hits.

Peer Tutor for the Haverford College Writing Center,

Fall 2018 - Spring 2020

I tutored students, many of whom do not speak English as a first language, in the basic tenets of creative and academic writing, including conventions of grammar, style, and punctuation.

Communications Intern for the Haverford College Communications Department,

Fall 2017 - Spring 2020

I wrote articles on everything from campus events to cool classes for publication on the Haverford College website and in the Haverford College alumni magazine. Some major projects I was involved with include the "Summer Centered" blog series, which focuses on current students and their summer pursuits; the "Where They're Headed" blog series, which focuses on recent graduates and their plans for the future; and the "What They Learned" blog series, which focuses on senior theses. In addition, I profiled professors and students, reviewed photography exhibitions and film screenings, and wrote histories of campus traditions.
